The part of the skin that will be treated must not be tanned in a sun bed or in the sun as the pigment in the epidermis will in that case block most of the light so that the hair follicles cannot be reached to the full extent. Skins that are naturally dark on the other hand can be treated very successfully.
The hair must not be epilated or hot waxed four weeks before the first treatment and between treatment sessions because empty hair follicles cannot be treated. However, you can shave, trim or use depilation cream. The hairs must be visible on the day of treatment so the skin therapist can determine the type of hair and programme the laser to the best settings.
What can you expect?
Since hair develops in various phases, more than one treatment session is required, six on average, before the hair is permanently eliminated. Only the hair in the growth phase responds as well as can be expected since the pigment the laser focuses on is at the bottom of these hairs.
You and the skin therapist will wear protective goggles during treatment in order to protect your eyes from the light of the laser. In consultation with you, the skin therapist marks off the area to be treated. Your hair is then shaved short so that all energy in the hair can be absorbed under the skin. A gel is then applied followed by treatment of the entire area. Afterwards the skin can be cooled and the skin therapist can apply the right products to rapidly minimise the reactions to the heat and to protect the skin.
The next treatment must take place once a new series of hairs enter the growth phase. On the face this is about six weeks and on the body, two to three months. Fewer hairs come back after each treatment and the hairs become weaker and thinner; eventually they disappear for ever. Treatment is usually tolerated very easily; in most cases one only feels a tingling sensation. Due to the benign effect of the Lightsheer diode laser on the skin, the skin will usually just become somewhat red and sometimes a bit swollen. However, this totally depends on the type of skin and usually these reactions disappear rapidly; you can resume your normal activities immediately.
